Office Suite
Everyone needs an office suite. An Office Suite is a collection of programs that include a word processor, a database, and a spreadsheet program. They also contain some other extras. Star Office is just that. It is completely compatible with MS Office, and runs on multiple platforms (Linux, Solaris, OS/2, Win 9x), and it is FREE. Although it took a little time for me to get used to it, I have really grown to like Star Office. And the promises made for version 6.0 will make it even better.

UPDATE: StarOffice is now longer free as of version 6.0. The good news though is that they released their code, and OpenOffice.org was formed. OpenOffice 1.0 is now out, and from my understanding, identical to (or very close to) StarOffice 6.0. I have been using both OpenOffice 1.0 now for a while, and have found it to be very compatible with Microsoft Office.

Anti-Virus
Unless you are never on the Internet, (and if you are looking at this apparently that is not true) or you never transfer files to your computer then you need to have some type of anti-virus software. I like InoculateIT. It has a simple interface, but is very powerful. I have had less problems with it then the highly popular commercial version that I had bought (and since removed). And remember this one is completely free. They only charge for tech support, and how often do you need to call you anti-virus utilities tech support. (I know I never did).

UPDATE:InoculateIT is no longer free. A friend told me about AVG about a year ago, and I have been using it since. The free version of AVG is limited in that you can only use the "simple" interface. But beleive me, the simple interface if just fine for 90% of the public

Archive Utility
An archive utility (sometimes called a ZIP program) is invaluable for anyone who downloads program. Archive utilities are also used to save space on your hard drive by compressing many rarely used files into one small file. PowerArchiver is the best I have found. Although it is not quite as user-friendly as the commercial versions, it does not take long to learn. The user-interface is very similar to a particular commercial version and it comes with a tutorial and an extensive help file for those of you not so "computer literate". It also has a lot of extra features that some of the commercial versions do not have, and they will become quite invaluable.

UPDATE:The latest version of PowerArchiver is also, no longer free, but I have provided a link to download the free version under the licence agreement packaged with the program. Although the freeware version is listed as BETA, I have not had any problems.

Instant Messenger
Instant messengers have become an important part of web-surfing. The one I use, and probably the most popular, is ICQ. It stands for "I Seek You". One drawback is the security. ICQ will, by default, tell the world your information. But don't worry, you can change this.

Did you write a program, or do you know of one that I should put in this category? Let me know. Just remember that it must be FREEWARE.
