This page was originally done while I was first learning about Linux. I have since become a regular Linux user. In fact, I have pretty much handed our Windows box over to my wife, since I only use it for games and as my internet connection. (As you may or may not notice, I use CompuServe, so my WinBox is our proxy server.) I have left this page here for "historical reasons", but have since developed a whole site for my Linux notes, HOWTOs, projects, etc. My new linux site can be found at: http://ourworld.cs.com/kvsgentgeen/

I was originally thinking about a small version (disk version) but found that most did not allow for GUI's, and those that do were difficult to use.

I have chosen to use DragonLinux for few reasons:

  • It is a small version (can fit on one CD-ROM) that I could download. Since I really am not sure if I will like LINUX or not, I do not want to pay for it and then decide I do not like it.
  • It is a version that I could use on my DOS partion. Once again, I am not ready to trash my computer for something that I have never tried before.
  • It is based on Slackware, one of the oldest and most stable version of LINUX.
  • It had the best documentation I found when comparing it to other small versions.

I am a school teacher who has resurrected some old computers that the school discarded. I will sacrifice one of these to try LINUX. I cannot trash what is on the computer because I use the computer in my classroom. The computer runs Win98, has 64mb RAM, and a 4gb HD with 1.9gb free space.

Installation and Setup

Nov. 13, '00 - I just installed DragonLinux v2r1 on one of my work computers. I only had about 1 hr. to do it so I was not able to setup all of the different components, but so far so good. I was able to install DL, and run the DL setup. During the setup, DL allows for you to specify the swap size, which packages to install, how much disk space to use. I choose 32mb swap, all of the packages, and 1 gb disk space. The documentation has been right-on so far.
NOTE: Next time I think I will review the packages better since the full install requires 730 Mb HD space. This leaves the computer with .9gb free space under Windows. Also DL currently only supports 2gb of allocated space without contacting support. (That only leaves 1.3gb for your files)

Nov. 17, '00 - Well I spent most of my free time today trying to set up the X client and GNOME. Since the computer I am using is not a new computer, I don't have all of the documents on all of the hardware. This has made the setup a bit of a hit or miss. I have not been able to get it right yet, but it should be a matter of time. I just hope I can get it figured out before I give up.

Nov. 20, '00 - I got it running! At least I think I have the set-up correct. I found out that the problem was my MS intellimouse (with roller) When I used a normal PS2 mouse, thing went OK. The weird thing is that the desktop for Gnome is larger then the viewing area. I do not know if this is the way it is supposed to be, or if I have a setting wrong.
