Lesson 8 - Wrapping It All Up

Objective: To be able to create your own HTML document.

I hope by now you have a basic understanding of HTML documents. I hope now that you can create valid HTML pages, and understand why it is important. If you decide that you want to use Netscape Composer, or Microsoft's FrontPage, or some other fancy WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) HTML editor, that is fine by me, I just wanted you to have the knowledge necessary to check the validity of those pages. Now you know how to go back and check your work. I think that the more you work with a text bases HTML editor, the more you will appreciate the "power of simplicity".

Now that I have given you all the information on how to create your own web page, now you need to show me that you can create your own web page. This will also serve as proof that you have completed the course. Your page should be created using a text based HTML editor. Don't use Composer, or MS FrontPage, or MS Word, or some other fancy editor. I would prefer you used one of the ones I suggested in lesson 1. And yes, there are ways to know what software you used to create your web page. Your page will also have to use the following tags:

  1. Header tags. Be sure to include at least level 1 and level 2 headers.
  2. FONT tags. This includes a change in color and size from the default settings.
  3. EMphasis, STRONG, and Underline tags.
  4. Ancor tags. You need to include two links. One can be to any web page (Yahoo, Google, whatever) and one to an internal page. To keep things simple, I would suggest you use your HTML page that you have been working on throughout the course as your second page.
  5. IMG tag. You need to include at least one picture on your page.
  6. CENTER tag.
  7. Paragraph tag. Remember that this should be used on all your paragraphs.
  8. TABLE Be sure to include at least one table. This can be a table to convey data, or a table used for page layout, just so that you show that you can use a table.

You can write your page about anything you want, as long as it meets all of the above requirements. Some ideas include a short autobiography, a course syllabus, a lesson or an introduction to a lesson. You can have all of the requirements meet on one page, with your second page simply a blank page with a link returning to the first. Or you can use both pages to meet all the requirements. Here is a screen shot of an example page that meets all the requirements.

Since you will need to e-mail me the final product, please remember to keep all of you documents and images in one folder. Then when you have completed your 2 pages, you will need to e-mail them to me so that I can verify that you have completed the course. Remember to compress your folder before mailing it to me. You can e-mail it to no_one. If you do not know how to compress your work, please feel free to e-mail me and let me know what OS you are using and if you have any compression software (Windows Winzip, Macintosh Stuffit, etc.) and I will be happy to help you through it.

Congratulations, you have completed the course. If you like, you can return to the lesson index page or simply shutdown your computer and celebrate with a piece of cake.
